Education

My research is divided between work on the systematics of the Coleoptera and insect conservation biology. I am particularly interested in the higher classification of the beetles, based on phylogenetic principles. My major expertise is in the taxonomy of the Bostrichidae, Colydiidae (and related families), and faunistics of West Indian Beetles. Conservation biology work has focused on inventory and monitoring of National Parks using beetle communities as a model system. Please visit the site for the Virgin Islands Beetle Fauna Project, and sample some of the things I am working on.

My teaching duties are for Insect Identification , Biosystematics , Seminars, and Graduate Advising. I occasionally offer Evolution of the Coleoptera, and other special topics.

Service activities include identifications of Colydiidae, Bostrichidae, and West Indian beetles, Executive Committee Member of the Entomological Society of America's Pacific Branch, Past-President of the Entomological Society of America and Coleopterists Society

NOTE TO POTENTIAL STUDENTS:  The capricious demise of the Department of Entomology in July, 2005 saw the Entomology Faculty dispersed across 3 Departments. I moved to the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology, but the Entomology MS degree and Minor are intact and still offered with the full support of all previous faculty. See the MSU Entomology Group Page at  <http://entomology.montana.edu/>, and the MS Degree in Entomology Page at <http://entomology.montana.edu/Careers/Entomology-MS-Degree.html>

My CV with a full list of publications, etc., updated September, 2005.
